Editorial Services

Congratulation on making it to the editorial stage of your writing process! Below is an extensive list of all the services I offer in the order that I recommend based on your writing progress. Less developed manuscripts will likely require an editing service near the top of the page, while more finished manuscripts will require a service near the bottome of the page. If you are still unsure about which editorial service is best for you, feel free to contact me! I would also be happy to tailor a service to your needs if none of my packages fit what you are looking for. I edit all forms of writing but sepcialize in fiction, fantasy, sci-fi, and academic writng.

Beta Reading

A beta reading is a very broad analysis of what works and what doesn't work in a piece of writing. The emphasis is on reader experience, which includes character development, pacing, genre/audience, confusing moments and the overall direction of your manuscript. There is no in-text feedback, and the service is usually done in the earlier stages of the writing process.

Package includes:

  •  assessment letter (1-2 pages)

  • summery letter of the plot

Price: 0.5 cents per word

Manuscript Evaluation

A manucript evaluation is similar to a beta reading, but it is more invloved in the specific elements of the story. These elements include the narrative arc, setting, audience engagement, more detailed character development, pacing, and reader immersion. There is a hgiher attention to detail and is usually the first step taken once the entire manuscript is complete.

Package includes:

  • Assessment letter (6-10 pages)

  • minor in-line comments

  • 1-hour remote meeting to discuss changes and concerns

Price: 1 cent per word

Developmental Edits

A developmental edit is a deep examination the text at a closer, more pinpointed level. The focus is aimed at story elemtents including narrative style, perspective, world building, plot, setting, dialogue, story progression, and pacing. This service is usually done in the middle of the writing process after a beta reader or a manuscript evaluation.

Package includes:

  • assessment letter

  • extensive in-line comments

  • one-hour meeting to discuss changes and concerns

Price: 2 cents per word

Line Edits

Line edits focus on your authorial voice and style. Edits are made at the sentence and paragraph level by examining word choice, clarity, flow, and repetition. This service is usually completed at the end of the writing process once you have read over the work at least once. Edits are made in Suggestion Mode on Google Drive. If this is not a great platform for you, I can switch to whichever you’re most comfortable with and tailor the service to your needs.

Package includes:

  • a copy of you manuscript with in-line comments and corrections visible

  • a clean copy of your manuscript with all edits accepted

  • assessment letter

  • one-hour meeting to dicuss changes and concerns

Price: 2.5 cents per word

Copy Edits

A copy edit addresses errors in the text at the mechanical level. This includes punctuation, grammar, and spelling. It also ensures that all details of the text are consistent throughout the entire work. This is usually the last step taken before a manuscript is submitted for publication once all other edits have been completed.

Package includes:

  • meticulous in-line comments

  • comprehensive style sheet documenting all editing choices and world building details

  • assessment letter including moments that violate the style sheet

  • one-hour meeting to discuss changes and concerns

Price: 2 cents per word

Line & Copy Editing Combo

This is a combo of both line editing and copy editing packages. Because both of these services examine the text at the word level, it often makes sense to get them done at the same time. It also makes more sense for me to make note of both grammar/punctuation and word choice simultaneously.

Package includes:

  • line edit assessment letter

  • a copy of you manuscript with in-line comments and corrections visible

  • a clean copy of your manuscript with all line and copy edits accepted

  • comprehensive style sheet documenting all editing choices and world building details

  • assessment letter including moments that violate the style sheet

  • one-hour meeting to discuss changes and concerns

Price: 3.5 cents per word

"Emma provided me with powerful insight that took  my writing from a string of mushy sentences to a cohesive body of work. When I felt stuck with improving my work, Emma gave me the critique I needed to better myself even further! I'm truly grateful for the experience."
